Lilacs

(Original Poem 2009)

(Updated version 2014)

The smell of lilacs fill the air;

the smell that fills your frozen mind;

with this you feel fingers through your hair;

sending your dreams to trail behind.

If you look down you will see;

violet flowers upon your bedside;

a white haired woman saying let them be;

whispering that you were fine but even she lied.

If you dare look above you can see;

brilliant light like the sun beckoning;

daring you to ask what will happen to me;

but all that comes to be is your own screaming.

The light is not meant for you;

instead your screams are joined by more;

your horrid plans in life have seen you through;

from your lips come a prayer never uttered before.

With a final plead for your life;

by the living you will be all but forgotten;

there is a final breeze that pauses the strife;

the smell of lilacs placed upon your coffin.
